Admissions

At Newlands we have a specially designed Reception area, with a covered outdoor space  equipped to meet the needs of four-year-olds. Children start in a reception class in the September before their fifth birthday. Our Early Years Foundation Stage offers children a happy beginning to their school life.

Emphasis is placed on play activities together with rhymes, songs, stories and discussions and we also help them to learn to record some of their findings and thoughts.

Our main aims are to:

  • Stimulate their imagination and creativity
  • Enrich language development
  • Form a basis of mathematical understanding
  • Encourage the development of manipulative skills
  • Offer the chance to explore different materials
  • Develop muscular strength and co-ordination
  • Create habits of listening and concentrating
  • Establish the use of symbols and patterns which form the basis of reading and writing
  • Extend their understanding of science and the world around them
  • Respond to their needs to explore through their senses
  • Above all, we want to help the children learn to respect and enjoy the companionship of other children and adults, develop their self-confidence and evolve a sense of security within the school routine.

Applying for a Reception place for September (4 & 5 year olds)

If you would like your child to start school with us you can: Apply Online

You can apply for up to 3 schools, putting them in order of preference. It’s in your best interests to list 3 schools. Naming only 1 school does not guarantee your child a place at that school or give your child priority for a place over another child, neither does naming a school more than once.

For advice email: kentonlineadmissions@kent.gov.uk

Please note: Application acceptance dates change yearly, please check the above website or contact KCC admissions to find out more.

Appeals

If you are unhappy with the school place you’ve been offered, you can appeal for any of the schools you named in your application.

KCC recommend you still accept the place your child has been offered. This will not affect your appeal and will guarantee your child has a school place if your appeal is unsuccessful. If your appeal is successful you must remember to tell the school you were originally offered that you no longer want the place.

If you weren’t offered your chosen school, this is usually because the school is full and there were other children who more closely met the school’s oversubscription criteria.

Please see the KCC website for more information including timescales:

If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

In-year Admissions

Applications for year groups other than the normal point of entry should be made directly to the school.

In year admissions form

Newlands application form

Completed forms should be returned directly to Newlands Primary School, this can be done via email to office@newlands-tkat.org

Application outcomes will be confirmed in writing no later than 15 school days from receipt of application.

If the number of applications for the school, for any year group, is more than the number of places available, the oversubscription criteria (as per our Admissions Policy) will be applied. The same oversubscription criteria will apply if the school is in a position to offer a place from the Waiting List.
In the event of the school being oversubscribed, priority within each category will be given based on distance as described above with those closest being given higher priority.
Where two or more children have the same distance in the same category random selection will be used to establish which is ranked ahead of the other.

For casual admissions, the distance will be measured by an appropriate web mapping service using the walking option. There is no expectation for the child to walk the route calculated and it is a measure of distance for admissions purposes only.

In the event that your application is unsuccessful and you would like to pursue an appeal, please click here to access further information and an Appeal form.

If you would like to arrange a tour of the school or have any queries regarding the admissions process please contact the School Office.
