Personal Development

Newlands Primary school supports children to be reflective, responsible learners, who feel safe, secure and special throughout their time with us. We have a range of curriculum and pastoral offerings which support this development.

We are passionate about developing children’s resilience and all adults at Newlands are fantastic listeners who know the children. They can therefore offer targeted, practical support to enhance the development of each child as an individual.

ACE a Champion for every child

The TKAT ‘A Champion for Every Child’ (ACE) programme provides those children who are eligible for the Pupil Premium with personalised 1:1 support to help them progress both in terms of academic outcomes and social and emotional development.
Each child has their own dedicated ACE Tutor who is trained specifically in helping pupils and their families to identify and overcome barriers to learning at school.

At Newlands, children and tutors talk positively about the ACE Programme, children sharing that it helps them to feel more confident in school. Activities in ACE sessions include (but are not limited to!) working on emotions, an academic target such as reading, encouraging children to improve their attendance and having lots of fun through creative activities - everyone loves the end of term cooking!

Our ACE ambassadors are children who help us to promote ACE across the school and suggest ways to improve ACE sessions. This ensures we keep

ACE relevant to the children - who it is all about!

Thrive

At Newlands we have two qualified Thrive practitioners. Thrive offers DFE approved training to support the wellbeing and mental health of children and young people. We are embedding a whole school Thrive approach to managing and understanding behaviour across the whole school. Practitioners also work closely with the rest of the staff team to monitor children’s wellbeing and offer small groups and 1:1 intervention to children who need individualised support. Thrive focuses on a relational approach which aligns with Newlands ethos as all staff form fantastic relationships with children across the school.

PSHE

Our PSHE curriculum gives pupils the knowledge and skills they need to keep themselves safe and healthy. We want to allow children the space to be curious through questioning and exploring a range of scenarios related to our world. Alongside the Thrive approach and ACE project we want children to have a secure sense of self and to celebrate who they are and embrace their diversity and the diversity of others.

Our PSHE curriculum is organised into the following areas:

Relationships Health and Wellbeing Living in the Wider World
  • VIPs
