Newlands Primary School

As an end of term treat, St Mildred's Bay went on an awesome trip to @Widget's World in Margate. As well as a celebration for the children's hard work all year, this also helped with the children's sensory diets as lots of the learning in St Mildred's Bay has a sensory aspect. The children (and adults) enjoyed the soft play, the sensory room, the bouncy castle, the role play area, different games and each child was given £1 to get a duck from the claw machine as a souvenir. We even managed to catch a picture of Mr Foley stuck in the rollers when he tried to join in with a game of tag! 🤣 The children loved every part of it (even the minibus ride) and would definitely like to go back. All of the children represented the school's values to the highest standard and showed how amazing Newlands are! 🥰 #TeamNewlands

Last week, Mr Foley hosted the final school council session of the year! Over the course of the year the school council have done many things to help both Newlands and our local community. From designing and helping to choose road safety posters to put outside our school, to litter picking in our local area, and helping choose new play equipment for our playground! To reward their hard work and volunteered lunchtimes throughout the course of the year, Mr Foley helped the children to create their own school council badges! The year 6s were especially excited as it gives them a keepsake as they approach their last few days of primary school! From Mr Foley, Mr Bailey and everybody at Newlands, thank you all and well done! 🥰 #TeamNewlands

This week Minnis Bay went to Dumpton Gap beach as part of their learning about 'coast to country'. The children thoroughly enjoyed collaborating on some impressive sand art, making everything from sandcastles to mermaids. They then enjoyed a problem-solving competition; the children had to collect rocks and pebbles and try to build the tallest tower. The class were exceptionally well behaved and everyone had a fantastic time. ☀

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents who completed the Active Lives Survey back in March. Thanks to your help, alongside our classes, we managed to secure lots of credits with Sport England to purchase a wide variety of sports equipment, including: skipping ropes, bouncy hoppers, cricket sets, parachute, giant snakes and ladders, plastic rackets and a selection of balls. We are putting these resources to good use during lunchtimes, so the children have lots of exciting activities to enjoy. 😊

Throughout terms 4 - 6 a number of children have been working hard to design and build their own carriage. We have been working alongside an engineer from SouthEastern Railway, who has been guiding and supporting the children and helping with any problem solving dilemmas they have faced along the way! KS1 pupils had to build a chassis and use string to provide a braking system for moving forwards and backwards. KS2 had to make a battery powered motor system to drive forward and in reverse. On Wednesday 9th July these children attended a celebration event at Ramsgate Leisure Centre where they had the opportunity to talk with professional engineers, test their carriages and observe the work of other children from many schools across the region. We even had two winners on the day! 🏅

As the summer holiday approaches, Kent Police would like to notify parents of a current concern over children using catapults, possibly in response to social media. There has been an increase in the number of reports received relating to animals and wildlife being targeted, injured or damaged by objects fired from catapults. While carrying a catapult is not a criminal offence, its use may lead to criminal liability depending on the circumstances, for example under: • Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (intentionally killing or injuring any wild bird); • Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (causing an animal to suffer); • Section 1 of the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996 (causing unnecessary suffering to any wild mammal); • Section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act 1953 (unlawfully having any offensive weapon in a public place, meaning any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to a person, or intended to do so); and • Section 1 of the Criminal Damage Act 1971 (intentionally or recklessly damaging property) Kent Police would like to share the following advice: 1. Dissuade your children from leaving home with a catapult. 2. Explain to your children that using a catapult to cause damage or harm is a criminal offence. 3. If you wish to dispose of a catapult, contact your local beat officer who will be able to assist (details can be found at www.kent.police.uk).

After School Club
Join the fun!
We have a dedicated group of school staff that run our after school club, providing a snack and range of activities. These vary daily and include table tennis, art and crafts alongside traditional games such as dominoes, draughts and jigsaws.

This week in Reception we have been enjoying our new book ‘You Choose’. The children have been very fortunate to have been gifted this book from TKAT, to enjoy with their grown ups at home, they really enjoyed interacting with the pictures and having a choice in the story. #TKAT #onetkatfamily

Last week we were very lucky to have Vanessa, a volunteer from the RNLI, come into Newlands to deliver a presentation about Water Safety at the beach. The children learned all about lifeguards and the importance of their role in ensuring we stay safe at the beach. The children especially enjoyed trying on the lifeguard uniform. This presentation came at a perfect time, with the incredibly hot weather; our children should now know how to stay safe when cooling down on the beach!

Last week, Minnis Bay went to the Granville Theatre to watch ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’. The children really enjoyed the show, becoming captivated by the characters and the storyline. Mr Bailey said “The children were exceptionally well behaved, as they sat beautifully throughout the performance, and it was a joy to see them participate with the characters during the show.

**Summer Reading Challenge** Over the Summer holidays it is important to continue to encourage children to read outloud regularly to ensure they don't lose the pace, fluency and expression they have worked so hard to build over the school year. Our local Kent Libraries are offering a free challenge to continue to foster children's love of reading over the holidays. Simply visit the local library in person or online to register your child's interest and as an additional challenge Mrs Musgrove, Newlands phonics lead, is offering a reward to every child who presents her with their certificate or badge after the summer holidays. Who will be the first to complete the challenge? How many books can you read over the holidays? The challenge is on! Follow the link for more information. https://www.kent.gov.uk/leisure-and-community/libraries/summer-reading-challenge?sfnsn=scwspmo
